GSHA September 2023 Webinar Tuesday September 26th, 2023 at 7pm-8pm EST on Zoom Registration closes Monday September 25th Complimentary for GSHA and GAA Members and $25 for Non-Members Abstract:
Hearing loss affects individuals of all ages, impacting their communication abilities and overall quality of life. This presentation provides a review of hearing loss, tinnitus, and explores treatment options available to manage the conditions effectively. There are three different types of hearing loss, including sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss. Each type of hearing loss requires a different form of treatment. The different types of hearing aids available include behind-the-ear (BTE), receiver-in-the-canal (RIC), in-the-ear (ITE), completely-in-the-canal (CIC) devices, and Lyric devices. Each type and model of device have advantages and/or disadvantages. For example; technological advancements in hearing aids, such as digital signal processing and directional microphones, have significantly improved their effectiveness in amplifying sound and reducing background noise. Cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing systems are surgical interventions for hearing loss. Surgical interventions hold strict candidacy criteria; typically limited to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. Tinnitus affects a significant portion of the global population. While no cure exists, management strategies include sound therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and tinnitus retraining therapy. Sound therapy uses external sounds to mask or distract from tinnitus, cognitive-behavioral therapy helps develop coping mechanisms, and tinnitus retraining therapy combines sound therapy with counseling to habituate the brain to the tinnitus signal. In conclusion, this presentation provides an overview of hearing loss, tinnitus, and treatment options. Learning Objectives: b. describe tinnitus and treatment options
