Abstract: "Risk" is a word that guides most clinicians' decision making in dysphagia management. However, research shows that when healthcare providers are overly risk adverse (also known as defensive practice), there are worse patient outcomes. Emerging literature in dysphagia has increased the complexities in what has been previously considered "risky" versus "safe." This presentation will cover seven key ethical principles in healthcare and how they can be applied to patient care in dysphagia management. Patient rights and clinician responsibilities will be discussed as a reflection of these ethical principles.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
● Describe how the ethical concepts of non-maleficence, beneficence, health maximization, efficiency, respect for autonomy, justice, and proportionality relate to dysphagia management
● Apply the legal concept of duty to disclose into their current standard of care in dysphagia management based on an understanding of the complexities of risk in dysphagia management
● Contrast a clinician's defensive practices versus a patient's rights (to choose, bodily autonomy, and capacity) in a clinical case study

Biography:
Kara Jones M.A. CCC-SLP CBIS specializes in adult swallowing, communication, and cognition. She has experience in outpatient, acute care and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Kara works at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, GA. She is passionate about her work with patients with head and neck cancer and neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders. She received her Master’s at SUNY University at Buffalo. Kara is a past President of the Georgia Speech Language Hearing Association (GSHA). She has presented at various state conventions and at ASHA in 2021 and 2022. She is a winner of the Dr. Robert A. Hull Leadership Award.
